My first online program — "way back" in 2015 — began at the request of teachers who were just starting out and, naturally, feeling a bit overwhelmed and under-confident with putting their training into practice. They were trained, certified and technically “ready.” They had opportunities to bring this yoga they loved to classes of students like all of us. Only, they felt like they needed more.
And options… were limited.
Another yoga training or certification seemed to be an expensive and time-consuming track resulting in having even MORE information to process… which seemed almost counter-intuitive.
While they may not have put it into words, at this stage… there simply was no place to go for the community and support necessary to assimilate and integrate all they had received in training. There was no mentorship available to help yoga teachers bring all they knew, all they loved, and all they had become… into their own classes.
Having worked with yoga teachers since 2007, I saw this need: the need for an accessible, practical and supportive framework for professional development outside of the traditional teacher-training model.
And so, The Skillful Yogi was born.
I created that original online teacher-mentoring program to respond to the following four needs that I believe are essential for all yoga teachers who want to get better and more effective at what they do:
1. Ongoing, Dynamic ENGAGMENT with the Subject
We’re busy. Constraints of time, resources and energy may make our own professional development as teachers a challenge. But more importantly, in order to become a better teacher and remain enthusiastic about what you do, it is crucial that you keep refining your skills and understanding, right?
I wanted to create a program that made the important work of refinement of your skills and your continuing education as a teacher accessible, affordable, and effective.
2. A FRAMEWORK to integrate what they receive in training.
The Skillful Yogi is less about giving you new information and knowledge, although there is some of that too. It’s more about empowering you to take ownership of the tools and knowledge you already have so you can share them with confidence and skill.
But even more than that, ownership of your skills and knowledge allows YOUR unique voice to emerge, so you begin to teach not only from what you’ve been taught, but from who you ARE.
3. Even the best 200-hour training is JUST THE BEGINNING!
We know that yoga is a path of lifelong learning and growth. Isn’t teaching as well? As you begin and continue teaching, questions naturally arise based on your real-life experience. Real students, with real bodies in real-life teaching situations are the best sources of ongoing learning if we have the structure and support to process what comes up in class.
In this program, you’ll get answers to your questions, clarify your understanding, fill in the gaps of your knowledge and receive clear guidance in further refining your teaching skills.
And, while our group mentoring program is NOT an advanced teacher training, you will grow and improve in your teaching, and your practice, in ways you would not have expected.
4. We FLOURISH in good company.
In yoga, learning happens best when done in community. As teachers, we may be leaders in our local community and yet we don’t have a network to tap into ourselves. It might be because we did our training in another city, or we live in rural area, not close to other teachers.
The Skillful Yogi is about working closely with other teachers and being part of stimulating, supportive, and respectful learning community is part of what.
As you’ll read below, that original program was not only well-received, it was pretty revolutionary in terms of structure and content. Most importantly, though, was the impact it had on our participants.
This is why I’m thrilled to announce the return of my online mentoring program this Spring.
I’ll be leading a small group through the most-requested topics for going beyond the basics of great teaching to take your skills to the next level of impact, authenticity, effectiveness.
You’ll leave grounded in your abilities, confident in serving your students, and more inspired than ever to share your unique gifts. You’ll emerge as a stand-out teacher in your local community who guides, inspires and empowers students not only to DO yoga, but to LOVE yoga!
Now, that original six-month program was incredible, and extended. But what I’m hearing from teachers now is that time is a rare commodity for most of us.
We’re looking for efficient and effective tools to hone our skills. I understand it’s important to see noticeable improvement rather quickly. This is why I made this program only three months. Believe me, big shifts are not only possible in this amount of time, they’re practically a certainty given our content, our process and all the support that will be available to you.
Pre-work begins March 1. If you’re ready to take your teaching to the next level of impact and effectiveness as a sought-after voice in your local community, I’d love to welcome you.
